The exam at a glance
- Varies by provincial certifying body (written + practical skills)questions
There is no single national firefighter exam in Canada. Provinces certify to NFPA professional qualifications (Fire Fighter I/II, now in NFPA 1010; Hazmat Awareness/Operations in NFPA 1072) through bodies accredited by IFSAC and/or the Pro Board (e.g., Ontario Fire Marshal, provincial fire training agencies). Written exams are multiple choice; skills are tested by practical evaluation. Many departments also require EMR or first-responder medical certification.
Main topic areas

| F | Forcible entry, search and rescue |
| G | Tactical ventilation |
| H | Water supply, hose, streams and suppression |
| I | Loss control, fire cause, extinguishers and prevention |
| J | Hazardous materials awareness and operations (NFPA 1072) |
| K | Emergency medical responder care |
How to study
- Learn the job performance requirements (JPRs) in NFPA 1010 FF I/II; written items map to them.
- Know fire behaviour, flow path and modern fuel loads; UL/NIST research is often tested.
- Know the ERG colour pages, TDG classes and zones for hazmat awareness/operations.
- Practise SCBA, ladders, knots and hose skills hands-on; written study alone won't pass practicals.
- Check your province's certifying body for its exam format and reference texts.
- Practise every day in short sets. When you miss one, work out why each wrong option is wrong.
